A ROYAL CURTSY THAT CAPTURED THEWORLD

Princess Catherine's graceful welcome to the Sultan of Oman as Windsor celebrates a historic state visit

On a rain-swept day in Windsor, a simple gesture became one of the most memorable images of a historic royal welcome. Catherine, Princess of Wales, dipped into a deep, poised curtsy as she greeted Sultan Haitham bin Tarik of Oman on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. The moment lasted only seconds, but it conveyed something that elaborate ceremonies sometimes struggle to express: warmth, respect and the enduring power of tradition.

A Royal Welcome at Windsor The Sultan was visiting Britain at the invitation of King Charles III. At the ceremonial reception on Datchet Road, the King and Queen Camilla were joined by the Prince and Princess of Wales.

As the King greeted the visiting monarch, Catherine offered her graceful curtsy beneath the covered royal dais, a courtly gesture of respect recorded by photographers and television cameras.

Elegance in Green The Princess wore a tailored dark-green Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen coat, complemented by a matching hat and a delicate high-necked lace detail. Her historic Prince of Wales feathers brooch brought an additional touch of royal heritage to the ensemble. Green is also one of the colours of the Omani flag, lending the look a fitting note of diplomatic symbolism.

Forty-Four Years in the Making

The occasion carried significance far beyond royal fashion. This was the first state visit to the United Kingdom by a Sultan of Oman since 1982, when Queen Elizabeth II welcomed Sultan Qaboos bin Said. It was a visible reaffirmation of longstanding relations between Britain and the Gulf nation.

Ceremony and Diplomacy Prince William had received the Sultan earlier in the day. The royal party then travelled through Windsor in traditional horse-drawn state coaches, followed by a ceremonial welcome and military honours at the castle. William and Catherine rode in the Australian State Coach alongside senior Omani officials. That evening, Windsor Castle hosted a state banquet in honour of the visiting ruler.

More Than a Curtsy Oman occupies an important position on the Arabian Peninsula and has long played a diplomatic role in the region. Against that wider backdrop, the Windsor welcome offered a distinctly human image of international relations. A curtsy cannot settle the challenges of the modern world; nevertheless, it can beautifully express the courtesy through which nations begin their conversations.

For Catherine, whose composure and style attract international attention, it was another

quietly assured appearance. For the Sultan, it was a memorable opening to a landmark visit. And for those watching around the world, one elegant curtsy provided the image of the day.
