SAUDI ARABIA PLANS TO BUILD THE HIJAZ EYE
By Publisher Ray Carmen
Saudi Arabia’s remarkable transformation under Vision 2030 could soon gain another spectacular landmark.
Plans have been unveiled for the Hijaz Eye, a giant observation wheel proposed for the holy city of Madinah. If developed, the attraction would become one of the city’s most recognisable modern landmarks, offering breathtaking panoramic views while expanding Saudi Arabia’s growing portfolio of world-class tourism destinations.
The proposed project would occupy a 33,700-square-metre site and has an estimated investment value of approximately SAR 511 million (around US$136 million). It is being promoted as an investment opportunity aimed at attracting private-sector participation.
Unlike traditional amusement rides, the Hijaz Eye is envisioned as a premium visitor experience. Passengers would enjoy sweeping views across Madinah while the surrounding development could include restaurants, cafés, retail outlets, landscaped public spaces and family entertainment, creating a destination that complements the city’s religious and cultural importance.
The proposal reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader ambition to diversify its economy beyond oil by investing heavily in tourism, hospitality and entertainment. Alongside landmark developments such as NEOM, Diriyah and the Red Sea Project, the Hijaz Eye would form part of the Kingdom’s continuing efforts to encourage visitors to extend their stay and explore more of Saudi Arabia’s heritage and attractions.
Although the project remains at the proposal and investment stage, it has already attracted international attention as another example of Saudi Arabia’s bold vision for the future.
If approved and completed, the Hijaz Eye could become one of the Middle East’s most distinctive observation attractions—a new symbol of modern Saudi Arabia while respecting the unique character of one of Islam’s holiest cities.
