Hidden behind reinforced doors, surveillance systems and layers of armed security are places that most people will never be permitted to enter.

But is there really one “most secure place” on Earth?

There is no official winner. Instead, several locations are famous for extraordinary protection.

Fort Knox guards a large portion of America’s gold reserves behind thick granite walls, reinforced concrete and a vault door requiring multiple combinations.

Area 51 is a highly restricted United States military facility surrounded by warning signs, sensors and controlled airspace. Its secrecy has inspired decades of speculation.

The Cheyenne Mountain Complex was built deep inside a mountain to withstand powerful explosions and protect important military operations.

Meanwhile, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault safeguards backup seeds from around the world inside an Arctic mountain—protecting part of humanity’s food future against disasters.

These places rely on far more than locks. Their protection may include restricted airspace, biometric identification, motion detectors, cameras, reinforced structures and security procedures that are never fully revealed to the public.

Perhaps the world’s most secure place is one we know almost nothing about.
