WORLD OF 7 HONOURS MR ASIF HASAN WITH THE GLOBAL HUMANITARIAN MEDICAL EXCELLENCE AWARD 2026
By Publisher Ray Carmen
THE MAN WHO GAVE THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN A FUTURE
Some people change the world through politics, wealth or extraordinary inventions.
Others change the world quietly, through compassion, dedication and the remarkable ability to save another human life.
Mr Asif Hasan belongs to that extraordinary second group.
For more than three decades, this distinguished British cardiothoracic surgeon dedicated his professional life to saving children born with serious heart conditions.
At Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital, he became one of the country’s most respected specialists in paediatric heart surgery and transplantation.
His achievements are measured not simply in surgical procedures, but in the thousands of children who have been given the opportunity to grow up, attend school, pursue careers and enjoy family life.
1. AN EXTRAORDINARY MEDICAL CAREER
Appointed as a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital in 1995, Mr Hasan went on to help establish the hospital as an internationally respected centre for children’s heart surgery.
Throughout his career, he performed more than 4,000 open-heart operations, including approximately 3,000 as lead surgeon.
His work also included hundreds of heart transplants.
These extraordinary figures represent thousands of families whose lives were transformed by the skill and dedication of Mr Hasan and his medical colleagues.
2. GIVING CHILDREN A SECOND CHANCE
Among his most significant achievements was his contribution to developing mechanical heart-support techniques for seriously ill children awaiting transplantation.
The Berlin Heart, a mechanical blood pump, can help keep young patients alive until a suitable donor heart becomes available.
Mr Hasan also pioneered a surgical technique known as bootlace closure, helping surgeons accommodate donor hearts that would otherwise be too large for some young recipients.
These advances expanded treatment possibilities for children facing life-threatening conditions.
For parents confronting the possibility of losing a child, such developments represented something beyond medical progress.
They represented hope.
3. THE CHILDREN WHO GREW UP TO SAY THANK YOU
One of the most moving moments of the 2026 Pride of Britain Awards came when former patients gathered to honour the surgeon who had helped save their lives.
Nineteen former patients joined the emotional tribute.
Among the children whose lives were transformed by Mr Hasan’s work were Max Johnson and Cecilia Adamou, both previously recognised by Pride of Britain.
Another patient, Seb Hollingsworth, underwent lifesaving heart surgery as a baby and later required further treatment.
Their stories demonstrate the extraordinary significance of children’s heart surgery.
A successful operation does not merely save a life in the present.
It creates the possibility of an entire future.
4. THE PRIDE OF BRITAIN LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
In October 2026, Mr Hasan received the prestigious Pride of Britain Lifetime Achievement Award.
The honour recognised his remarkable contribution to paediatric cardiac surgery, transplantation and the training of future generations of surgeons.
The emotional ceremony celebrated not only his surgical achievements, but also his humanity.
Mr Hasan has consistently acknowledged the dedication of the nurses, doctors and other NHS professionals who worked alongside him.
His modesty has become part of his remarkable reputation.
5. A LEGACY THAT WILL CONTINUE FOR GENERATIONS
Mr Hasan retired from clinical practice in 2026.
Yet his contribution to medicine will continue.
Throughout his career, he trained and mentored surgeons who now practise in Britain and internationally.
His experience and teaching have helped establish a new generation of specialists capable of treating children with complex heart conditions.
He has also supported charitable medical work overseas.
The children whose lives will be saved by surgeons he trained represent another extraordinary dimension of his legacy.
