MARTIN LEWIS CBE — THE MAN WHO FIGHTS BRITAIN’S CORNER
By Publisher Ray Carmen
For more than two decades, Martin Lewis CBE has become one of Britain’s most recognisable and influential consumer champions — a journalist and broadcaster whose mission has been remarkably consistent: give ordinary people the information they need to protect their money and stand up to powerful institutions.
Lewis founded MoneySavingExpert.com in 2003, transforming what began as a consumer-information website into one of Britain’s best-known sources of practical financial guidance. He remains its Executive Chair, while his work has expanded far beyond saving a few pounds on household bills.
His real achievement has been making complicated subjects understandable.
Mortgages. Energy bills. Banking. Insurance. Credit cards. Pensions. Student finance. Council Tax. Consumer compensation. Online scams.
Subjects that can leave millions of people bewildered have become the territory in which Lewis is at his strongest.
FIGHTING FOR THE CONSUMER
Lewis has never been content merely to explain the rules. He has repeatedly campaigned to change them.
His campaigns have ranged from bank charges and PPI compensation to financial education in schools, energy costs, treatment of people in Council Tax debt and tougher action against fraudulent online advertising. MoneySavingExpert says its bank-charge and PPI work helped consumers reclaim more than £10 billion between the two campaigns.
One particularly important battle has concerned scam advertisements.
Lewis's face and name have themselves repeatedly been stolen by fraudsters promoting bogus investments and other schemes. MoneySavingExpert stresses that Martin Lewis does not endorse products in advertisements, making supposed investment endorsements featuring him a major warning sign.
Rather than accept the problem, Lewis campaigned for greater responsibility from technology companies and stronger legislation surrounding scam advertising — helping keep the issue firmly before politicians, regulators and the public.
A VOICE THAT GOVERNMENTS LISTEN TO
His influence now reaches directly into Westminster.
As recently as June 2026, Lewis appeared before the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee, giving evidence on the regulation of essential utilities and raising issues including energy standing charges and the case for a more consistent social tariff for water customers.
That ability to move between television studio, consumer campaign and parliamentary committee is part of what makes Lewis unusual.
He is not simply telling people where to find a cheaper deal.
He is asking why the system operates as it does in the first place.
MONEY AND MENTAL HEALTH
Lewis has also recognised that financial distress is about much more than figures on a bank statement.
In 2016 he founded the Money & Mental Health Policy Institute, a charity dedicated to examining the relationship between financial difficulties and mental health and improving the way institutions respond to vulnerable consumers.
It is another example of the wider philosophy behind his work: finance should serve people — rather than overwhelm them.
RECOGNITION FROM BRITAIN
Britain has formally recognised that contribution.
Lewis was appointed OBE in 2014 and was promoted to CBE in the 2022 New Year Honours for services to broadcasting and consumer rights. The official honours record confirms his citation.
Then came another landmark in 2026, when BAFTA presented him with its Television Special Award, recognising what it described as his extraordinary and lasting impact on British consumers and public life.
It was an appropriate honour for a broadcaster who has demonstrated that consumer journalism does not have to be dull or remote.
Done properly, it can change lives.
THE PEOPLE’S CONSUMER CHAMPION
Martin Lewis's success ultimately rests upon something remarkably simple: trust.
People listen because they believe he is fighting their corner.
At a time when household finances are increasingly complicated — and when fraud, artificial intelligence and sophisticated online scams are creating new risks — an independent-minded consumer voice has arguably never been more valuable.
Martin Lewis CBE has spent more than twenty years giving that voice a national platform.
And whether he is confronting an unfair charge, challenging a government minister, warning families about a scam or explaining how somebody can save a few hundred pounds, the principle remains the same:
Knowledge gives consumers power.
For millions of Britons, Martin Lewis has made it his life's work to put some of that power back into their hands.
WORLD OF 7 salutes one of Britain's great consumer champions.
