Some sailing journeys are holidays. Others become defining chapters in a person’s life.

Crossing the Atlantic remains one of the great ocean adventures. Sailors departing Europe or the Canary Islands follow the trade winds towards the Caribbean, completing a passage that demands preparation, patience and teamwork.

A South Pacific crossing carries yachts through immense distances between the Galápagos, French Polynesia, Tonga, Fiji and New Zealand. The rewards include remote islands, extraordinary cultures and some of the clearest water on Earth.

Sailing around Cape Horn is an altogether different challenge. Powerful winds, large waves and rapidly changing conditions have made the southern tip of South America legendary among mariners.

The Northwest Passage through the Canadian Arctic is opening for longer periods during some summers, but it remains a difficult and environmentally sensitive route requiring specialist knowledge and careful preparation.

Indonesia offers another great adventure. Thousands of islands, coral reefs, active volcanoes and diverse cultures create almost limitless possibilities.

Closer to established cruising centres, the Greek Islands, Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast and the Caribbean provide adventures that can be enjoyed without undertaking a major ocean crossing.

Expedition yachts also travel towards Antarctica, where sailors encounter icebergs, penguins, whales and some of the wildest conditions on the planet.

Every great sailing adventure begins long before departure.

A vessel must be properly prepared. Weather must be studied, emergency procedures understood and the wellbeing of the crew protected.

The sea rewards those who approach it with confidence, humility and respect.
