RELIANCE AND ROLLS-ROYCE PLAN FIGHTER-JET ENGINE PARTNERSHIP IN INDIA
By Publisher Ray Carmen
Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries and British engineering company Rolls-Royce have announced plans to collaborate on developing and manufacturing an advanced combat-aircraft engine in India.
The proposed partnership is connected to India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft programme, known as AMCA. This ambitious project aims to produce an indigenous fifth-generation stealth fighter and strengthen the country’s long-term air-combat capabilities.
As part of the initiative, Reliance and Rolls-Royce will explore establishing a dedicated aerospace gas-turbine complex in India. The proposed facility could support engine design, development, testing, manufacturing, production and long-term maintenance.
The collaboration would combine Rolls-Royce’s experience in advanced aerospace propulsion with Reliance’s manufacturing capacity, technological resources and ability to execute large industrial projects.
Reliance Executive Director Anant Ambani said the partnership’s objective is to help create an indigenous aero-engine ecosystem and build lasting national capability in advanced propulsion technology.
For India, mastering fighter-jet engine technology represents more than another defence-manufacturing project. It could reduce dependence on imported equipment, strengthen strategic autonomy, create specialised employment and support the growth of a competitive domestic aerospace industry.
The AMCA prototype is expected to be unveiled in 2028. However, the Reliance–Rolls-Royce initiative remains a proposed partnership, and further agreements, technical decisions and government approvals may be required before full-scale development begins.
If successfully implemented, the collaboration could become an important milestone in India’s journey towards technological self-reliance and a stronger position in the global aerospace sector.
