CANNES CLOSES IN A BLIZZARD OF GLAMOUR, CINEMA & GLOBAL STARDUST

By Publisher Ray Carmen

The 79th Cannes Film Festival draws the curtain on another unforgettable chapter on the French Riviera

For nearly two dazzling weeks, the French Riviera once again became the epicentre of world cinema as the 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival transformed Cannes into a living theatre of glamour, artistic ambition, and cinematic spectacle.

From sweeping red carpets and standing ovations that seemed to stretch into eternity, to midnight premieres shimmering under Mediterranean skies, Cannes reaffirmed its place as the most closely watched cinematic gathering on Earth.

At the heart of this year’s closing ceremony inside the legendary Palais des Festivals, anticipation reached fever pitch as the coveted Palme d’Or was finally revealed. Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu claimed the festival’s highest honour for Fjord, a deeply human exploration of family, faith, and fractured identity.

The jury panel, presided over by South Korean auteur Park Chan-wook, brought together a striking international constellation of talent including Demi Moore, Chloé Zhao, and Ruth Negga — a reflection of Cannes’ increasingly global cinematic voice.

Among the most talked-about titles illuminating the Croisette were Minotaur, Fatherland, Coward, and the quietly poetic new work from Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, All of a Sudden, each adding its own tone to a festival defined by emotional range and creative risk.

Yet Cannes has never belonged to cinema alone. It is also the world’s most influential runway — and this year’s red carpet delivered its familiar storm of spectacle. Indian icon Aishwarya Rai Bachchan commanded global attention in a dramatic feathered white couture silhouette that dominated social media within minutes of her arrival.

Hollywood royalty lit up the Riviera with appearances from Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore, and Bella Hadid, while legendary filmmaker Peter Jackson received an honorary Palme d’Or tribute during the festival’s opening celebrations.

In a parallel moment of reverence, music and screen icon Barbra Streisand was also honoured with a special honorary Palme d’Or acknowledgment, recognising a lifetime of cultural influence despite her absence from the Riviera.

As the final fireworks fade over Cannes tonight, what remains is not simply a list of films or winners — but a mosaic of images, emotions, silhouettes, and stories that will travel far beyond the Riviera’s shoreline.
